Maitara Island, is considered the border of Tidore and Ternate sultanates, chosen as the background for IDR 1,000 note because of its mixture of sea/ Gamalama mountain beautiful scenery. Only about 15 minutes boat ride from Ternate, Maitara is a must-see destination when you’re at Ternate.
We stopped at Maitara Island for surface interval. Staying at the jetty with a big long canopy was enough for all of us. Adit and NDC crew bring us coconut for each of us, and Padang food for lunch. It tastes heavenly.
Maitara Island is surrounded by white sandy beach, with calm, blue water. Wished we were spending the night there in one of the little chalets by the beach (maybe next time).
We spent around one hour stop during our surface interval. After enjoying the Padang food and fresh coconut drink, we had to resist the temptation to explore the island. There was no time to do more exploring. But watching the boats sail by, beautiful sky and clouds above Gamalama Mountain from Maitara Island, and exchanging our diving and family stories with other divers, somehow was enough for us.
Hoped I could go back in Maitara Island again for another surface interval someday.
